September rows are glorious! The air and water temperatures are warm enough for adventure, so at the open row on Monday night we temporarily rigged the Katriel as a pair, the most difficult kind of sweep boat to row. Members took turns switching between a 4+ to the Katriel. It was a blast to feel how every tiny adjustment in the pair directly affects the boat’s set. Some swimming was involved ….

Fantastic NMRC showing at the Henley on the Boardman!

Thank you to all the NMRC volunteers who helped de-rig, re-rig, load and unload boats for another successful NMRC showing at TACR’s Henley on the Boardman.

Rowers from Marquette, Bay City, TACR and NMRC competed in 1x, 2x, quad, 4+ and 8s on a 1000 meter course. NMRC boats competed in 12 of the 14 races bringing home plenty of gold, silver and bronze medals.

Everyone had a ton of fun! One novice rower shared how thrilling it was when her boat achieved moments of that legendary and elusive run rowers feel when everyone in a boat is in sync. She’s hooked! Moments like that make all the rigging and boat juggling a regatta entails worth it!

TACR ran a great event and the weather and water were perfect. If you couldn’t participate this year, you can be sure NMRC will want to participate as a club again next year. Coach Joe coxed for the Experienced 8 and wore his GoPro for the race, so if you’d like a taste of what it was like to race, click this link: Exp 8 - Henley on the Boardman 2024

Special thanks to our trailer drivers Tom Ulrich and Daniel Schillinger. Thank you also to our NMRC members who showed up to help with rigging and cheering even though they chose not to race.

Volunteer Opportunities

Sleeping Bear Marathon is coming up fast on October 5 from 7am to 2 pm. We need 10 volunteers to help keep runners safe and traffic calm on the course route. It’s fun to hang out with other NMRC members, cheer on the runners throughout the day, and earn the club $1,000! Please toggle in on iCrew if you can make it. We currently need at least 5 more members to sign up.

De-Rigging Small Boats

We will be de-rigging and storing small boats on October 13 from 10 am to 12 pm at Solon Township Park. We will meet at the boathouse immediately following the Sunday morning row to de-rig and load the singles, doubles, and most of the sculling oars. Bring tools! Once we de-rig the boats and load them on cars, we will transport them to a storage pole barn in Empire. If you have a vehicle with racks that can carry small shells, please bring it! After we safely stash the boats and oars, anyone interested will gather at Arts in Glen Arbor to toast the season with a burger and cold beverage.

Thank you to those who have donated to help fund the quads!

We still need $3500 toward the purchase of the 2nd quad.

We are asking for everyone to donate and/or ask any local businesses you support to consider sponsorships. We know asking for money is hard. This is the only way we are able to purchase equipment for our club. Memberships go toward coaches, insurance, technology, lease, and repairs.

Our business sponsorships page on our website explains what we offer with multiple levels of giving. There is a printable PDF to give to interested businesses.

We also have one donation available where you can name the other quad for $5,000.

Please help us fund these quads to grow our sculling program and get the boats everyone wants to row! We are utilizing Paypal Giving so we no longer lose a % of the donation to credit card fees.

YES! I WANT TO HELP USING PAYPAL GIVING

Morning Sculling for Experienced Rowers: Don’t forget we have independent sculling M, W, TH and Sat mornings for experienced level 2 and 3 rowers. These will be independent rows without a launch boat. Reservation required through iCrew. Please contact Diane to get signed up for independent sculling.
