August 18, 2024 Newsletter

Hello NMRC!

Happy August! We’ve been having great rows both mornings and evenings with only the rare cancellation for weather. The best most beautiful rows of late summer and early fall are headed our way!

This week: Help earn some bucks for NMRC!

PLEASE sign up on iCrew to help at the Cedar Polka Fest! We need at least 6 NMRC volunteers for both Thursday, August 22, 7-11pm and Saturday August 24, 8pm-12am. Each night earns us $300 with 6 volunteers for a total of $600 for the event. Currently we only have 3 signed up for Thursday and one for Saturday! Let’s support the township that allows us use of the park and represent the club. Everyone who volunteered last year had a blast and got nice quality t-shirts (Lyn says it is her favorite)!

This Wednesday under the BIG TENT August 21st, 2024, at 6 pm for the annual KICK OFF MIXER for volunteers! There will be food and beverages provided. Volunteer T-Shirts & Parking Passes (parking passes are available to volunteers working 2 or more shifts) will be available for pickup.

Another volunteer opportunity is coming up on October 5 for the Sleeping Bear Marathon. It’s fun to cheer on the runners throughout the day!

Dedication of the Katriel

Thank you to everyone who could attend the dedication of The Katriel, a beautiful double donated to NMRC by Carol Adler. It is named in honor of Carol’s late husband, Keith Adler. Katriel is Keith’s name in Hebrew. Keith admired and always supported Carol’s love for rowing. NMRC is grateful to Carol for her gift to the club in Keith’s memory.

Schedule Change Successes:

We listened and the changes are working:

  1. Our novice rowers have been developing their skills with consistent Thursday night coached rows. Thank you to our coaches for their great instruction and our novice boat captain, Dana Fear, for filling an eight consistently with a mix of new and experienced rowers. The mix of skill levels helps new rowers learn faster and helps experienced rowers articulate their knowledge. If you are an experienced rower and would like to help mentor new rowers, contact Mindy at row@northernmichiganrowing.club.

  2. This Monday night, August 19, an experienced eight crew will begin preparation for the Henley on the Boardman, hosted by Traverse Area Community Rowing. Thank you to Dan Schillinger for organizing and inspiring a crew with the goal to beat NMRC’s winning time at last year’s Henley. Let’s get ready to ROW!

  3. Tuesday and Friday morning rows with Coach Sue and Coach Joe have been a big hit!

Regatta News and Sign ups:

Three NMRC members made us proud at the Grand Rapids Beer Scrimmage on August 3. Dana, Daniel and Amy traveled to Grand Rapids with members of TACR. NMRC mixed double with Dan and Dana took gold in the men’s double category! Dan scoped out the competition from across the state that we might see at the Henley on the Boardman and has inspired a crew to get to work!

Check your July 1 email for a message from Dan Schillinger for more details about about the NMRC Summer 2024 regatta schedule.

If interested in rowing in a boat at the Henley, contact Daniel Schillinger daniel@northernmichiganrowing.club  or 231-633-8733

Thank you to those who have donated to help fund the quads!

We still need $3500 toward the purchase of the 2nd quad.

We are asking for everyone to donate and/or ask any local businesses you support to consider sponsorships. We know asking for money is hard. This is the only way we are able to purchase equipment for our club. Memberships go toward coaches, insurance, technology, lease and repairs.

Our business sponsorships page on our website explains what we offer with multiple levels of giving. There is a printable PDF to give to interested businesses.

We also have one donation available where you can name the other quad for $5000.

Please help us fund these quads to grow our sculling program and get the boats everyone wants to row! We are utilizing Paypal Giving so we no longer lose a % of the donation to credit card fees.

YES! I WANT TO HELP USING PAYPAL GIVING

Morning Lake Leelanau Sculling for Experienced rowers:Don’t forget we have independent sculling M, W, TH and Sat mornings for experienced level 2 and 3 rowers. These will be independent rows without a launch boat. Reservation required through iCrew. Please contact Diane to get signed up for independent sculling.
