Hello NMRC!

Exciting News: Winter Training Program is here!

We hope you have been enjoying your time to recover and relax since we put the boats away.  Tom and the board have been working diligently on establishing a Winter Training Program...and we are ready to announce the details. The Winter Training Program will consist of both options for in-person and independent training sessions. It is valuable to maintain and enhance our fitness levels to prevent injury and make rowing more enjoyable when we get out on the water! The weekly workout program will be emailed out on Sundays. The program has two categories to choose from:

  • FITNESS level workouts to increase and maintain aerobic levels and to work on strength training.  1x/week attendance in person is recommended.

  • COMPETITIVE level workouts with a focus on high level aerobic work and targeted strength training. 2x/week in person attendance is recommended. The competitive level will be geared to those looking to participate in some regattas next season.

WHERE?: We will be conducting 60-75 minute erg and strength training sessions from our new winter home base at the Sleeping Bear Bay Club in Maple City. It is a fitness center owned by Stacy Jago, https://sleepingbearbayclub.com/ located in the building that houses the Broomstack restaurant and the Leelanau Curling Club.

WHAT DAYS?: Monday and Wednesday evenings from 5:30-6:45pm and 6:45-8:00pm (if demand is there, we will consider adding additional sessions). Saturday mornings, 10-11:30am, we are planning on having an open session for both levels.

WHO CAN ATTEND?: Attendance is open to anyone. You will need an iCrew account and must toggle in for each session through iCrew.  Each nightly time slot is dedicated to one category, Fitness or Competitive.

WHAT DO I NEED TO KNOW?: Weekly workouts will be emailed out on Sundays to those who have signed up for our Winter Training Program and have paid the fee.  You will also be required to download the ERG DATA app from Concept 2 to allow use of the erg workouts. Strength and cross training workouts will be recorded with details being finalized on which method will work best.

COST?: The Winter Training Program is focused on in-person and independent training.  Coach Tom will be available for instruction and assistance to those not able to make the in-person sessions. The cost is the same for both FITNESS or COMPETITIVE level, as well as, for independent training.  Weekly workouts will arrive on Sundays for both independent workouts and in-person sessions.  Tom will be monitoring all data entered and offer coaching for improvement.  There will be a one time fee of $250 (Nov 13 - April 13).  We will have a $15 drop-in fee to attend erging sessions in person but that will not include the training plans and additional coaching being offered.

WHEN DOES ALL THE ACTION START?:  Beginning Monday, November 13, the first sessions will start.  Once you sign-up and pay in iCrew, a training packet will be emailed to you within a couple days.

QUESTIONS ABOUT TRAINING?:  Reach out to Tom directly (tcweber68@gmail.com)

This is an exciting step for NMRC and one we want to build on.  If you have previously attended a Learn to Row, this is a great opportunity to get more instruction and build your fitness. If you have friends that may be interested, encourage them to come work out with us this winter and begin to understand what keeps us all coming back season after season.  We look forward to seeing you all over the next several months.

Quick Updates:

Thank you - We thank everyone who has gone above and beyond to help support the club in so many ways. We have some quick updates:

Lake Leelanau packed up - Big turnout (16+), corral clean, storage shed organized, boathouse clean and organized, boats on trailer, launches and engines secure for the winter. We appreciate all the help to make this happen in one day!

Dangerous trees have been removed - Thank you to Daniel (with the help of his daughter and her friend) for cutting down (5) five threatening Poplar trees just outside our fence line at Lake Leelanau.  With a dedicated support group of 5, and our always helpful neighbor Randy, everything is cleaned up, stacked and looking great!

Boats Asleep For The Winter - Our trailer with the big boats is now stored safely away from the elements at a Sutton's Bay barn of a fan of the program. He gave us a good deal and we have hopes he might join us on the water in the future.

New 2x/-and Oars Have Arrived - Yes, our new Midweight Vespoli 2x/- (thanks to the generous donation from Carol Adler) and 4 sets of sculling oars have finally arrived.  After travelling from San Diego, CA, to Boston, MA then to Ann Arbor, MI and now, finally here.  Diane is storing them for the winter for us in her pole barn...Thanks Diane!!

5 Club ergs will be arriving this month -  Through some creative horsetrading, the club is the proud owner of (5) five Concept 2 Model C Ergs.  Updated PM5 Monitors are on their way, so these will be a HUGE addition to our equipment.  Look for them at our winter training sessions at Sleeping Bear Bay Club in Maple City.

Donations - We have the most amazing members! We are so grateful for everyone’s time, talents and money that makes this club continue to thrive. We are building a wonderful program we should all be proud of.
