July 17th, 2022 Newsletter

Hello NMRC members and supporters,

Both NMRC sites are organized and energized with opportunities for new and seasoned rowers!  If you are having a hard time using iCrew to keep up with all our activities, please contact Mindy Hawley at mihawley73@gmail.com.  Mindy will walk you through the app so you won’t miss any rowing opportunities.

Featured Upcoming Events:

July 18 - Solon Township Skills and Drills/Open Row

July 23 - Solon Township Learn to Row

July 24 - Glen Lake Intro to Sculling

July 27 - Glen Lake Small Boat Self Rescue

July 31 - Solon Township Community Potluck

Punch Cards and Documents: We are getting the punch cards all activated on iCrew. We will be reaching out to some members about reconciling their rows versus their punches. If you have yet to purchase a punch card on iCrew and are rowing in open rows, please purchase your punch card. We will work with you to deduct past rows and make sure it is accurate. Also, documents are available to sign in iCrew. Please check for any outstanding documents. Everyone should have their US Rowing membership, US Rowing waiver and Safesport certification although it may not show up on iCrew just yet. If you need any help with US Rowing, any coach, coordinator or experienced rower can help.

Glen Lake News: Ask almost any rowing coach and they will tell you that the fastest way to become a better rower in big boats is to learn small boat sculling. It allows you to quickly see how your own small movements impact any boat.  We still have a few spots available in this week’s Intro to Scullingclass (see below). If you are interested but can’t make this session, please let Diane know. She is keeping a list of interested rowers, and we may occasionally add a last-minute class on a lovely calm day.

If you are on any of the GL sculling teams in iCrew, you will have a new required document related to self-rescue skills. We will send an alert when it is available. The Small Boat Self-Rescue class (see below) is a great way to get comfortable with these skills.

As of now, rack space at GL is completely full. If you have your own single and want to get on a waiting list, let Diane know.

GL Intro to Sculling, Sunday, 7/24, 7:30-10:30 am, at the Glen Lake location.  Attendees will start with stroke fundamentals on rowing machines (ergs) and finish in single and double rowing shells on the water. The cost is $50 ($40 for NMRC and GLYC members), and space is limited. Email Diane Hamilton at diham0675@gmail.com if interested. Please include your name, phone, and any sweep/sculling experience you have.

GL Small Boat Self-Rescue Class, Wednesday, 7/27, 7:15-9:15

This free session will cover small-boat safety and self-rescue techniques. You will have the opportunity to get in the water, capsize a shell, and practice these techniques under the supervision of a coach. Please register on iCrew.

Solon Township News:

We had a great turnout for our Learn to Cox event led by Coach Sue Parvin! Learning to cox can improve your rowing through skilled observation of others AND is a great way to fulfill your NMRC volunteer hours. Thank you to Karen Broach for the delicious baked goods, fruit, and signature gummy candies for the participants.

Fence Update: Special shout out to Rich and Lyn Bahle for taking ownership of the fencing installation, and thank you also to L2Cox attendees who stayed after their coxing class to help! We love how eager our members are to lend a helping hand.

Be sure to sign up on iCrew for Solon Township Open Rows available on Sunday mornings, Monday evenings, and Friday mornings!  We would love to fill more boats. There is also an opportunity at Solon Township for team quadson Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday evenings.  If you want to build a quad, contact Susan at soconnor@northwested.org or Mindy at mihawley73@gmail.com.

ST Skills & Drills, Monday Night Open Row, 7/18, 5:45-8pm

Sign up on iCrew for this technique-building session with Coach Sue Parvin. You will improve your technique with fewer meters but still get in a good workout. All levels are welcome and will benefit from this session.

ST Learn to Row, Saturday, 7/23,  9-12:30 am up to 10 participants at a cost of $50. (current NMRC members, the cost is $40) If you know of anyone interested in learning to row, please reach out to them and encourage them to sign up for the class. Please contact Karen at kdborach@yahoo.com to reserve your spot. Volunteers are needed as well. Please let Karen know if you can help.

ST Community Potluck, Sunday 7/31 4:00-7 pm. All NMRC members and family, park neighbors, and Township Board Members are invited. NMRC members are encouraged to bring a dish to share with other guests. For more information contact Susan O’Connor at soconnor@northwested.org and toggle to attend so we can get a head count. Neighbor Randy is super excited to cook up some brats for us! We will have a potluck sign-up to share soon. At 6:30 that evening, we will be officially dedicating the Resolute eight in memory of Jack Keyes. You are all encouraged to stay and attend the renaming ceremony.

Grab your NMRC gear!  Anything you order on the NMRC website will be delivered right to your rowing site. https://www.northernmichiganrowing.club/shop

Instagram highlight: We have videos and pictures from Coach Joe Carter after nearly every row at Solon posted on Instagram. Please give our page a follow to see both scullers and sweep boats in action at Glen Lake and Solon.

Thank you all for another successful week! We love the community we are building and the relationships that have been formed. Thank you for continuing to support NMRC. See you on the water!
