August 27, 2023 Newsletter

Hello NMRC!

We have lots of exciting news, announcements and NMRC volunteer opportunities to share!

NMRC’s First Grant- Our grant writing team secured a $1000 Rotary Grant from the Good Works Fund for equipment acquisition.  Awesome work! Our team of Cindy Opie and Elizabeth Roth have worked so hard and applied for 9 grants in total this season.

Equipment Purchases- With a couple generous member donations, we have purchased a gently used Vespoli 8+ with sweep oars and a Vespoli double that can also be rigged as a pair.  These boats will be ready to launch next season and will assist in the growth and depth of the club. We also were able to purchase 4 sets of Concept 2 sculling oars. Thank you so much donors!

Polka Fest- NMRC will receive a $600 donation from this weekend’s Cedar Polka Festival because we had 12+ members who generously volunteered at the event.  Thank you to our member volunteers!  They enjoyed the food, music, fun and wore those Polka Fest volunteer t-shirts with pride! This not only contributed to NMRC but to the community that affords us the use of their park!

GR Scrimmage- Congratulations to NMRC member Daniel Schillinger who went to Grand Rapids and competed in the Great Beer Chase and came home with some medals. Nice job!

Volunteer Opportunity!!

NMRC needs 6 - 10 member volunteers on October 7 to help us earn a $1000 donation from the Sleeping Bear Marathon.  https://sleepingbearmarathon.com/

Volunteers will man the race route on LaCore Road near the village of Empire from 8:30 am - 1:30 pm (minimum of 6 people required per the race permit).  After a team orientation in the morning, we will be spread out along LaCore Road to help keep runners in a 4 foot coned lane.  This allows the rest of the road to remain open.  Please email NMRC Board Member, Lindy Kellogg, at lindykellogg@gmail.com to volunteer and include your shirt size!  There will also be an event to toggle into in iCrew.

Novice Focused Sessions

As the weather begins to change, we would like to offer two sessions each week for Novices. These sessions will allow Novices to focus on the ‘basics’ of rowing and skill building through drills and extended coaching.

Experienced rowers will help with coxing and filling out boats.  This will be a good way to fulfill the member volunteer obligation of 10 hours per season.

Beginning in September, the following days will be NOVICE practices:

  • LAKE LEELANAU-

  • Sundays 8-10am

    1. Thursdays 5:30-8pm

  • GLEN LAKE-

    • Wednesdays 7:30-9:30am (sculling only)

Toggle in and have fun with other Novices and enjoy the fall color!

Please Note: Experienced rower open sessions will be reserved for Monday evenings and Friday mornings.

NMRC Member Social, Thursday, Sept 7, 6:00 PM  9:00 PM

At the Glen Lake Yacht Club

Please join us for an NMRC members (and guests) social on Thursday, 9/7. We will gather on the Glen Lake Yacht Club deck (or inside if weather requires), 6617 S. Sunset Drive, Glen Arbor.  This will be a very casual meet-up — BYOB and a snack to share.

Let’s share stories and compare blisters as our season begins to wind down!

TACR’s Henley at the Boardman, Saturday, Sept 9th

The Traverse Area Community Rowing (TACR) is putting on their annual fall Regatta on Saturday, Sept 9 beginning at 9am at Hull Park in Traverse City and NMRC is planning to attend.  Cost is $25/rower.  The day will consist of 1,000m races from 9am-noon in the following events:

  • 8+’s, 4+’s, 1x’s

  • Novice (1st year rowers)

  • Experienced

  • Men Only, Women Only and Mixed races for each event

After noon, rowers will place their names in a hat and create ‘composite’ crews consisting of rowers from the various clubs that will be attending.  It will be a GREAT day for fun and competitive rowing!  Besides TACR and NMRC, Grand Rapids, Bay City, and Detroit rowing clubs will be there. This is a GREAT opportunity for NMRC, both Novice and Experienced rowers and a wonderful way to support area rowing! Please talk to Tom and Joe if interested in competing as well as toggle in on iCrew.

Glen Lake Boat Storage and Dinner, Sunday, Oct 1, 3:00 PM  7:00 PM

Glen Lake Yacht Club

One of the last chances to get volunteer hours in this season!  Please help get the GL club boats safely stored for the winter.  We will need to row a quad, a double, and three singles about 1000 meters to the launch, load them onto cars and trailers, and drive them a short distance for winter storage.  Afterwards, we will gather at Arts in Glen Arbor to toast the season with a burger and a cold beverage. Please toggle in on iCrew to let us know you are coming
