November 6, 2022 Newsletter

Hello NMRC Family,

We’ve gone from a calm and crisp fall to a blistering, tsunami-like pre-winter in a week! It appears to have been a good decision to wrap up the 2022 rowing season when we did.

But wait! There’s still a month and a half of 2022 to go and it’s a great time to establish a regular work out routine to avoid losing the strength gains we all made this season.

Winter Training:

Starting this Wednesday, Nov 9 from 5:30 to 7 pm, join us at the Solon Township Hall in Cedar for our first Erg (Concept 2 rowing machine) and Stretch session. Indoor rowing or “erging” is an excellent way to improve your form and muscle memory. It is a fun workout and great training for next season, No more hurt backs! Bring a yoga mat or towel for stretching on the floor. We need members to bring ergs when they can. For this inaugural Wednesday, we could use 1-2 more ergs if you can travel with yours. Contact Mindy or Diane Hamilton (iCrew roster has contact information) with questions and to let them know if you can bring an erg.

We have been approved to have the hall on Wednesday nights through winter. We will make the effort to be there if we have members participating.

Planning Sessions Begin!

Immediately after the Nov 16 Erg and Stretch at Solon Township Hall, 7pm to 8pm, NMRC will host our first planning session for 2023. All members are encouraged to attend regardless if you attend the workout session. This club is member driven and volunteer led. We will schedule out our planning sessions and focus at this time. Please feel welcome to bring snacks and beverages of your choice. We have the hall reserved until 9pm.

Member Survey:

IMPORTANT! Your answers to the 2022 Member Survey are critical to our planning for next year. Please submit your responses by Sunday, Nov 13 to help guide NMRC 2023. The survey was emailed to all club members last week. Please check your email and let Mindy know if you don’t see it in your inbox.

Solon Township Update

We need a 2-4 volunteers this Tuesday, Nov 8 at 9 am to finish protecting the boats at Solon Township Park. Let Mindy know if you can make this morning wrap project at the park.

Thank you to Rich and Lyn Bahle, Karen Roth, Jodi Hummel, Joe Carter, Cindy Opie, Susan O’Connor and Mindy Hawley for working on this past gorgeous Saturday morning to move boats high up in the air on the trailer and to finish on the clean up both the oarhouse and storage shed.

Additional opportunities for Winter Training!

In addition to our weekly Wednesday erg sessions. We are partnering with other organizations and individuals. Please let us know if you have some great opportunities to share with our community for working out.

Pilates at Camille’s Body Shop in Maple City off of East Valley Rd. http://www.camillesbodyshop.info/ Camille has been running a sweet studio out of the first floor of her home for 15+ years. She has a pilates class MWF 9:15am weekly as well as other offerings. Her classes are affordable. $7 drop-in, $5 per class monthly pay ahead, and $50 monthly unlimited. She has in-studio and virtual options.

Doug Verellen came to one of her pilates classes and had this to say: “Camille’s class Yoga/Pilates Blend was ideal for me. The tempo was steady and always moving, but not too fast that I couldn’t keep up. I found it rigorous as it pushed me in several areas, however, I didn’t feel in danger of getting hurt. Also appreciated the variety of moves. It went through the majority of body movement. The atmosphere was warm and welcoming. I plan to attend more.”

TACR has a coached erg program in Traverse city at Elite Fitness. If you are interested, they are very interested in including NMRC members. https://tacrowing.org/programs/#indoor-rowing-beginners 5

Melissa Dow is working on a independent indoor rowing program so stay tuned for more info when its finalized.

Traditional X-country, Skate Skiing and Snowshoe Socials!

Once the snow flies, we’ll be talking about ski and snowshoeing. Some of the best training we can do preparing for a solid start to our rowing season.
