July 24th, 2022 Newsletter

Hello NMRC,

Despite a few cancellations this week due to the wind and weather, we got a lot done and had some great sessions on the waters of Glen Lake and Lake Leelanau. If you missed a row due to weather or if you are looking for more rowing opportunities, be sure to sign up for one of the several Open Row opportunities in the iCrew calendar at both Glen Lake and Lake Leelanau!

Also, please remember to complete your US Rowing Basic membership and waiver as well as your profile on the iCrew app! To make iCrew fully functional, we need everyone’s phone carrier specified, birthdate and emergency contact information. (Birthdates allow us to determine the average age of any boat.) Several people have had trouble finding where the birthdate goes. It is in Your Profile>Rower Settings (blue bar at the bottom of the profile page).

Special Upcoming Events:

July 27 - Glen Lake Small Boat Self Rescue

July 31 - Solon Township Community Potluck

Glen Lake Specifics:

If you are currently rowing or plan to row small boats from our Glen Lake location, please read and sign the Small Boat Self-Rescue document. It can be found under “documents” in your profile. If you need any help with these skills, or simply a refresher, join us on Wednesday for a dedicated session.  Small Boat Self-Rescue Class, Wednesday, 7/27, 7:15am-9:15am. This free session will cover small-boat safety and self-rescue techniques. You will have the opportunity to get in the water, capsize a shell, and practice these techniques under the supervision of a coach. Please register on iCrew.

Unfortunately our Learn to Scull event on Sunday morning was canceled due to the weather. We will be rescheduling as soon as we are able.

Solon Township Specifics:

Thank you to the enthusiastic crew who spent Wednesday morning re-rigging the quad. Coach Tom explained important rigging terms and how to make measurements in order to optimize performance. Thank you also to Rich and Lyn Bahle for re-hanging the shed doors to the oar house. This same crew helped to work on the Jack Keyes 8+ rigging Saturday morning! Big thanks to the Bahles, Carol Adler, and Kathy Heil for attending both days!

Solon Township Park Community Potluck, Sunday 7/31 4:00-7pm. All NMRC members and family, park neighbors and Township Board Members are invited. NMRC members are encouraged to bring dish to share with other guests. For more information contact Susan O’Connor at soconnor@northwested.org

Solon Township Open Rows: Open rows are locked in and attendance is expected if you are toggled into a session at 5pm the day before. A confirmation email will go out around 9pm confirming that a boat has been formed and the session is scheduled to happen. Please make sure you can commit to a row before toggling into it on iCrew. Other members are depending on you to fill that seat so that the boat can go out. Toggling out of a row does not generate an alert of any kind, so if there is an emergency and you have to miss a row, please let location coordinators, Susan or Mindy, know the situation so that they are aware and can make the necessary accommodations. We really appreciate your help with this.

New Members: Please continue to spread the word about NMRC. We will be offering more learn to row sessions in August, so please reach out to any friends or family about our club and encourage them to attend. The more rowers we have, the easier it is to fill seats in our boats. Let’s continue to grow NMRC.

Thank you to our members, coaches, coxswains for your dedication to NMRC. As we wind down the month of July, we have much to be grateful for… Next time you’re out rowing, don’t forget to take a moment to look around at the beauty that surrounds us… the Dunes on Glen Lake… the sound of the loons on Lake Leelanau… the sparkle of the sun rising and setting on our gorgeous waters. Take it all in… We are so fortunate.

Grab your NMRC gear!  Anything you order on the NMRC website will be delivered right to your rowing site. https://www.northernmichiganrowing.club/shop
