Sept 5, 2022 Newsletter

Hello NMRC,

Happy Labor Day! It feels like the season is winding down but fall is a great time to row. We hope everyone gets in as many sessions as possible before we close for the season. We said “see you next year” to coach Sue Parvin who left for Florida with an exciting travel schedule planned.

Please welcome coach Heather Adle, who will be coaching at Solon Twp Park one session a week. Heather was on the cross country trip along with coaches Melissa Dow and Tom Weber to pick up the trailer and boats we are fortunate to have at the Solon location.

Congratulations to Abigail Barbas who has been training as a coxswain and will be leading several boats in 2-3 sessions a week for fall. We are very happy to have her on our team!

Club Meet up

Join us at Bel Lago winery on Tuesday, Sept 13 at 6pm. It is located at 6530 South Lake Shore Drive overlooking Lake Leelanau. It is open until 8pm. They have a pizza and a 25% off bottle of wine special that evening. This will be an informal affair. Hosted by Mindy.

Looking for hosts to schedule future Club Meet Ups. Let us know when and where and we’ll put it on the calendar by emailing mindy@northernmichiganrowing.club.

Winter Storage:

We are still looking for winter storage for our large trailer filled with boats. We have one lead but are continuing our search for options to keep our boats safe this winter. if you have a lead, please let us know.

Glen Lake News:

Fall Sculling- Oh how those unpredictable autumn winds have been cramping our style for the last couple of weeks (or to be honest, sort of all summer)! We will continue to scull on Glen Lake throughout September.  However, we will readjust the schedule up to a couple times each week based on the wind forecast, sunrise/sunset times, and coach availability. Hopefully, this will minimize the number of last-minute weather cancellations. We will aim to notify everyone on the “GL all levels” team in iCrew, so watch your mailbox.

At this point, all classes will be “All Levels Skills & Drills”. Our coaches will tailor each class to those in attendance.

This week’s classes (so far)

Tuesday 7:15am and 6:30pm

Wednesday 7:15am

Thursday 7:15am

Save the date — September 30, 3pm-?, Glen Lake Boat Storage and Social.

Let's all pitch in to get the Glen Lake sculling boats put away for the season. It’s a great way to get some volunteer hours and have fun with other club members. We will row the club shells to a nearby launch, load them onto cars, and move them into nearby winter storage. When we’re finished, we will gather to socialize and celebrate another fun season (details TBD).

Solon Township News:

Schedule change- We have moved the Tues and Thurs team boats to Monday and Wednesday to consolidate our sessions. We are looking forward to having more than one boat out on the water at the same time. It’s fun to be out there together!

We have 3 seats available on Monday night for the 8+ team boat. We are looking for a commitment to attend most of the Monday sessions. However, we know this is a time when some will be heading back to winter homes or have other commitments. So if you are interested in a seat for a given night, we can most likely accommodate that. There are others who will fill in to ensure the boat gets on the water if needed. We just wanted to get as many people in the boats as possible.

Need help getting in a session? Please contact Mindy or Susan and they will do everything they can to assist. We need members to speak up if they are wanting to row but are unsure about how to do it.

Prepping the oarhouse for painting is ongoing. Gary Chleboun took the afternoon this last Sunday to really get the South wall scraped. Thanks Gary! If you have a paint scraper and want to take a little time to work on it, we’d love your help. We are looking to finish scraping and getting some primer on the bare wood this week. It is entirely possible the paint may contain lead as it hasn’t been painted for decades we discovered. Take necessary precautions and no nibbling on paint chips!

We are focusing on filling these open rows at Solon this week. We were able to fill the Sunday boat yesterday and go out on water that makes one appreciate calmer days…

Friday 8/26 at 6:45 am

Sunday 8/28 at 7:45 am *priority

Season Close: TBD. We have sessions scheduled at Solon into October and depending on the weather we will row as long as we can in the big boats.

Thank you to all our members, coaches, coxswain and supporters for making this club what it is. We have been reflecting on the amount of work, patience and commitment of everyone to get us to where we are now. No small feat with so much to build upon. Happy rowing this week! May the wind be kind to us!
