Hello Northern Michigan Rowing Community!

How can it be the end of July?! We have accomplished so much and are grateful for the community building happening at both Glen Lake and Solon Township! There are many beautiful days of rowing yet to come this season and remember you can purchase more rowing punches and punch cards on iCrew in the Club Home Store.

Glen Lake News:

Congratulations to the seven rowers who attended last week’s Small Boat Self-Rescue class on Glen Lake — Annabel, Cam, Gary, Holly, Judy, Karen, and Kathryn. Everyone became much more confident with self-rescue techniques, we had some great laughs; cheers, and several of our newest rowers even managed to get back in the boat on their first try. Amazing!

Unfortunately, we had to cancel the Intro to Sculling class last weekend due to high winds and storms.  We are hoping for calm enough weather to get this rescheduled soon.  In the meantime, we may hold a last-minute class on a calm day, so please let Diane know if you would like to be on the waitlistdiham0675@gmail.com .

We are now offering private sculling lessons on Glen Lake. The cost is $50 for 1.5 hours working individually with one of our U.S. Rowing certified coaches.  The session will be tailored to your interests and skill level and may include time on the erg, in a single shell, and/or with the coach in a double shell.  Contact Coach Melissa or Coach Tom directly to arrange.

Solon Township News:

Community Picnic tonight at Solon! There’s still time to pull together a dish to pass and join your fellow rowers, our Solon neighbors and Solon Township Board members for our Community Potluck from 4 - 7 pm. At 6:15 pm, we will dedicate the Resolute 8 in memory of Jack Keyes, a fifth generation Traverse City native.

Reminder! Our activities impact our Solon neighbors. Please be courteous in all interactions and keep voices down in the mornings and after 8 pm when launching and returning to shore. Coaches and coxswains, please hold off using the megaphone and cox box near the boat launch. Our neighbors appreciate their peaceful mornings and evenings. Also, Solon park closes at 10pm, please be leaving the parking lot by that time.

Guest Rower: We were able to get Kelly Claar, the Parks and Rec Chair, who was instrumental in helping us with the park location, into the Thursday night team boat. Her first time back in a boat in 20 years. She was paired with Susan O’Connor in 5 and 6 seat and when they stopped rowing, it felt like someone put the brakes on. We hope to have her back rowing with us again soon. Thanks Kelly!

Fence update: Thank you again to Lyn and Rich Bahle for wrapping up the fence project and digging post holes in cement-like soil. It is a huge relief to have the boats enclosed and the perfect swing of our new gates is a thing of wonder!

Next project: Painting the oarhouse and storage building. The township is willing to supply us with the paint and we want to continue to spruce things up. Please let Susan or Mindy know if you can help! We will then try to plan a day to get it done based on commitments from members.

Thank you to all our members and NMRC community. Please make some time for yourself to grab a seat in an open row or coordinate with others to get on the water soon. Email mindy@northernmichiganrowing.club for any help needed to get on the water.

Grab your NMRC gear!  Anything you order on the NMRC website will be delivered right to your rowing site. https://www.northernmichiganrowing.club/shop
