July 10th, 2022 Newsletter

We hope you are loving our gorgeous July weather and water!

NMRC members!  Don’t miss the opportunity to attend a FREE Coxing Clinic, next Saturday, 7/16 at Solon Township Park, 8215 S. Lake Shore Dr. Cedar from 9-11 am. Coxing is an excellent way to work off your 10-hour NMRC member volunteering commitment while improving your own rowing skills through observing others. Coach Sue Parvin will lead this clinic and provide a basic understanding of what it takes to cox a sweep boat. Please RSVP to: kdbroach@yahoo.com or sign up using iCrew. We will be needing our members to step up and take on some coxing roles as our college students who are currently coxing will be heading back to school at the end of August. Now is the time to give it a try!

It’s not too late to grab your NMRC gear!  Anything you order on the NMRC website will be delivered right to your rowing site. https://www.northernmichiganrowing.club/shop

Glen Lake News

This Sunday,  we had a meet & greet at the Glen Lake location at the Glen Lake Yacht Club. 8 members attended and we were able to share the ins and outs of this beautiful location and how to get involved in the singles and doubles sculling sessions. Please contact Diane Hamilton diham0675@gmail.com if you’d like to schedule a visit prior to joining a session. She’d be happy to get you familiar with the Glen Lake location.

Learn To Scull: On Sunday, 7/24, 7:30-10:30 am, there will be an Intro to Sculling session at the Glen Lake location (6617 Sunset Drive in Glen Arbor).  Attendees will start with stroke fundamentals on rowing machines (ergs), and finish in single and double rowing shells on the water. The cost is $50 and space is limited. Email Diane Hamilton @ diham0675@gmail.com if interested. Please include your name, phone, and any sweep/sculling experience you have.

Glen Lake Yacht Club is a private club and we are guests.  They have been very generous about letting us use their property, dock, and safety launches. Our use does not extend to the clubhouse/bathrooms, however, our coaches do have a key in case of an emergency.

Glen Lake is a sandy wet launch.  Occasionally there are reports of Swimmer's Itch, so take appropriate precautions.

Glen Lake has a different policy on confirmations/cancellations than Solon. We don’t need to worry about filling boats but do need to worry about filling classes and using small boats in high winds. So, please sign up for all GL sessions at least 12 hours in advance. You will hear from the coach if a session needs to be canceled for any reason – check your email and phone/text messages. Otherwise, just show up.

Solon Township News

Solon Open Morning Rows - All levels: Sundays 7:45 AM (8+, 4x),Confirmation will be sent by 9 pm the night before scheduled open rows regarding whether boats are filled for the next day.

We have opened the Monday 5:45 PM (8+) and Friday 6:45 AM (8+)Open Rows to all levels. Many experienced rowers are enjoying working with novice or less experienced rowers to help them and support the club’s growth.

Open Row Policy on confirmations/cancellations. We will do everything we can to promote filling seats in an open row so the boat can go out the next day. Unfortunately, there will be times we are unable to. We will get a confirmation email out around 9 pm the night before to let you know it is filled and able to go out. We were unable to fill the boat if you don’t receive a confirmation the night before. We will try to send out an email to the specific members who signed up that we were unable to fill the boat. If you have any questions about this, please contact Susan or Mindy for further explanation.

Rigging Basics Workshop with Tom Weber, Tuesday, 7/12 at 4 pm. Help re-rig the quad while learning the valuable skills of rigging. Everyone who owns their own boat can find value in this free clinic along with all rowers in our club. You can toggle on iCrew to attend. It is a free event.

Another Learn to row at Solon is tentatively scheduled for July 23rd or 30th. We know there are many future rowers waiting to participate in a learn to row. We will schedule as soon as we are able. Please let us know if you are wanting to participate and if you have a date preference by emailing: members@northernmichiganrowing.club

Launch Ride Alongs Members and interested potential members are encouraged to come and ride in the coach’s launch to get acquainted with the location and to see rowing from a different perspective. We have room for several people each session. Don’t be shy; we would love to have you come along for a boat ride!

Sunday, 7/31, 6-8 pm, Community Picnic/Potluck/Boat Naming Ceremony at Solon Township Park. All NMRC members, park neighbors, and Township Board Members are invited. Randy is ready to fire up his grill. NMRC members are encouraged to bring a dish to share with other guests. More information will be coming soon!

Facilities Update: This last week the O’Connor family, along with Randy, cut a tree down in between the buildings and trimmed some limbs to clean things up and allow for more solar power potential. They also built some shelving and cleaned and organized the storage building and Oarhouse. It was a big task and we appreciate it! There is always something that needs to be done. Please reach out to your site coordinators to inquire about where/how you can be helpful.

iCrew Update: We are seeing great progress on member usage on iCrew. Mindy is available to talk you through any issues you might be having. Call her at 231-714-7457 or email her @ mihawley73@gmail.com

Thank you all for another successful week of rowing! We are looking forward to the upcoming rigging workshop and the coxing clinic at Solon.
