May 27, 2024 Newsletter
Hello NMRC!
We are excited to hit the water! We will have rowing available on Lake Leelanau this coming week. A week earlier than our season June 1ststart. We have had some disappointing challenges come our way. But we will be a stronger organization for it.
Glen Lake Rowing- We were not able to secure our season rowing from the Glen Lake Yacht Club as of yet. We’ve always known rowing from a private club could be dicey with a separate board and membership. We are so thankful we have been able to row for three summers from the GLYC solidifying NMRC’s ability to grow as a club regardless of the outcome there. We have a short term June solution we will be sending out to current members if needed. However, we are working on long term solutions and may have them in place very soon. We will send out a follow up announcement when final plans are in place for Glen Lake Rowing. We are so thankful for your patience and understanding during this time. In the meantime, we have planned our Learn to Scull classes to be taught from our Lake Leelanau location where we have the rowing machines and the quads.
Diane Hamilton Board Resignation- Thank you Diane for all of your hard work on the NMRC Board since our inception. We will miss your help steering this organization but know that you will continue generously volunteering your time and energy to NMRC. Congratulations on acquiring your Level 1 US Rowing coaching certification.
If any current member is looking for an opportunity to help manage and provide a leadership role on the NMRC Board, please send an email to members@northernmichiganrowing.club.
National Learn to Row, June 1st:
We have a few spots left for our L2R celebrating National Learn to Row day. We offer this at no cost and it is truly the best opportunity to get a Learn to Row in at the beginning of the season. Please email row@northernmichiganrowing.club to get put on the list for this or any L2R and L2S classes. We will then send out an email with instructions on getting set up on iCrew to complete your waivers or pay the $25 fee for the remaining classes.
Please check the list for Learn to Row and Learn to Scull classes at the end of the newlsetter and on the website. We’ve added a Learn to Row for an evening:
June 19, 5:30pm-8:00pm, Wed: Learn to Row at Lake Leelanau
Huge Opportunity for Quads this 2024 Season:
We still need $7300 to purchase the quads!
We are asking for everyone to donate and/or ask any local businesses you support to consider sponsorships.
Our business sponsorships page on our website explains what we offer with multiple levels of giving. There is a printable PDF to give to interested businesses.
We also have one donation available where you can name the other quad for $5000.
Please help us fund these quads to grow our sculling program and get the boats everyone wants to row! We are utilizing Paypal Giving so we no longer lose a % of the donation to credit card fees.
YES! I WANT TO HELP USING PAYPAL GIVING
Lake Leelanau Rowing Schedule:
We are trying a skill level approach to sessions this season. This is a trial and we may need to make adjustments. Please give Mindy a call at 231-714-7457 if you have any immediate questions or for non time sensitive questions email members@northernmichiganrowing.club.
Tuesday PM, May 28th, we are starting our season with Coaches Heather and Joe taking out rowers to shakedown whatever boats we can. Hoping we can get enough experienced rowers there with the short notice.
Sessions at LL- Please be respectful of the other rowers and be on time. If you are running late, please text the coach directly so they know. Bring water in a plastic or a protected stainless bottle. You will need sandals that you can walk into and out of the water with them on. Also, please bring socks to cover your feet in the boat since we share shoes. Tight fitting clothes and layers are a must for rowing.
AM 6:45 am arrival, 7:00am hands on
PM 5:30 pm arrival, 5:45pm hands on
Tentative Lake Leelanau Schedule for May 28-June 15. If we are able to fill boats for these sessions we will add as needed.
Planning ahead: We are planning on adding open sculling M, W, F, Sat mornings for experienced level 3 rowers and require additional documents to be signed. They would be independent rows without a launch boat.
Lake Leelanau Summer Season Schedule after June 15th:Please note some changes to session skill level.
Questions about Rowing Levels? All new members need to have completed a Learn to Row even if they participated in winter training. Level 1 Novice is one year of rowing equivalent to 20+ sessions on the water and a general ability to row or scull with moderate proficiency. Level 2 Intermediate is one or two seasons under your belt. Most rowers that have started with NMRC 2 seasons ago would fall in this category without prior rowing experience. Level 3 Experienced is a high level of proficiency and rowing experience of over 2-3 years. It really depends on the amount of rowing you have acquired versus years. If you are not sure of your level, we are working on getting these on your profile.
Pitch in and help earn NMRC some easy money!
