July 10, 2023 Newsletter
Hello NMRC!
The smoke has cleared for now and the water has been fantastic for rowing. Toggle in for an open row that works with your schedule! Let’s fill some boats during our scheduled open rows on Glen Lake and Lake Leelanau. Upcoming open rows listed on iCrew under the Club Menu and Sessions List. The easiest way to toggle into a session you want on iCrew is (maximum 2 weeks out for open rows):
Your Home page > Your Attendance Plans > toggle to attending
There are still slots for organized boats to form as well. Is there a novice ready to take charge and form a novice boat? Mindy can get you a list of names to get started.
Oar Project: Our sweep oars need to be painted with our colors! If this is something you are interested in helping with, please email Mindy at mindy@northernmichiganrowing.club and we will get a list of volunteers going. Thanks to Dana Fear who is heading this project up.
Intro to Sculling
Our Glen Lake location has two Intro to Sculling classes coming up! This is a great opportunity to learn about rowing or experience sculling for the first time. Attendees will start with stroke fundamentals on rowing machines (ergs) on land, learn about rowing equipment and terminology, and finish in a double or quad rowing shell on the water.
Intro to Sculling classes (for ages 16+) at Glen Lake Location
Saturday, 7/15 8-10:30am
Sunday, 7/16, 8-10:30am
NMRC Member Social Tuesday, July 18th at Bel Lago Winery overlooking Lake Leelanau. It will be an informal gathering with no presentations planned but many of the board and coaching team will be there to answer any burning questions. Bel Lago is located just a few miles north of our Lake Leelanau location. They have a special on Tuesdays and we do not have an open row that evening. Everyone is invited!
New Option for NMRC Gear
It’s time to gear up for summer! Our website now offers two types of NMRC merchandise: “In Stock Gear” and “Made to Order Gear.” The new “Made to Order” section features visors, coffee mugs, a couple of sweatshirts, and other fun options.
Important Member Information
Arrival time: typically 15 minutes to the session time
Coaching from the boat: It is part of our club culture that we do not coach from our seat. If there are clear safety issues for the rower or the boat, these are outside of the general rule. Novices may get some help within the boat when rowing with experienced members but they should be limited. We are here for everyone to have learn, be supported and have a great experience.
Session Cancellation Policy
Coaches will make a determination if a row can take place as soon as possible before the row.
They will use multiple apps to gauge weather, wind conditions (including wind direction) as well as confer with the Location Coordinator before canceling a row. Every effort will be made to make sure this happens before anyone leaves for the location. There may be times when this isn’t possible and a determination can only be made with eyes on the water conditions at the location.
Coach cancellation actions:
Coaches will cancel a row through iCrew no less than one hour before the expected arrival time (15 minutes prior to a scheduled row). An automatic email is generated through iCrew. If it is less than an hour before the expected arrival time, the coach needs to send an email and text message through iCrew or text with their personal phones to all rowers, coxswains, and Location Coordinator signed up for that row. Every effort to alert rowers should be made.
Rowers responsibilities:
Rowers need to make sure they are checking both their email and iCrew before leaving for the location and have their phone with them to receive a text if enroute. Rowers should respond to let the coach know that the message was received.
Air Quality Cancellation Policy
NMRC will not have air quality cancellations. Air quality appears to be, unfortunately, an issue we may face for our entire 2023 season.
Every member is choosing to row based on toggling in and our club does not make any health decisions for its members. Members may take whatever precautions they feel they need to. If a rower has toggled in and they no longer are comfortable with rowing, the same policy of finding a sub within 24 hours of a session is requested. If a rower is unable to do so, contact the location coordinator and they will try to help. If a sub cannot be found, it is the rower’s responsibility to fill that seat. Rower should let the coach know they are concerned about the air quality at the session.
A coach may manage the row to lessen the impact with shorter pieces and a slower rate if the attending rowers are requesting it.
