May 14, 2023 Newsletter

Hello NMRC!

Thank you to everyone who helped with a very wet yard clean up at Solon Township Beach Park on Sunday.  We also rigged the Golden Girls, our four, and the Jack Keyes, our eight! It was tempting to sneak a shell out on the exceptionally calm water that day, but the safety launch wasn’t ready and there was work to do. Coach Tom did a great job guiding us through the (many) nuts and bolts of getting the shells rigged right. Thank you, Tom!

Second Quad - We have great news!! We made a trade with TACR to swap our extra 4+ with their extra quad. We will now be able to have a quad at Glen Lake. This is a major win for us! So often the conditions don’t allow for rowing in singles on Glen Lake. But having a quad will open up more rowing opportunities there. We are very excited. Huge thanks go to Melissa Dow and Todd Antrim of TACR for coming up with this swap to benefit both clubs.

Glen Lake Rigging - Join us Sunday, May 28 from 8:30 to 11:30 am,

to car-top our small boats to the lake, rig them, and then row them to the Glen Lake Yacht Club. This is a great time to check out the club location and connect or reconnect with other members. We will meet at pole barn #B25, next to Dave’s Garage. 12777 S Benzonia Trail, Empire, MI 49630

Welcome to Coach Ethan - Ethan Larson will be joining our coaching staff this summer.  Ethan is a sophomore at the University of Michigan and has just completed his second season on U of M’s 1V eight team.  We are thrilled to have him with us this summer! Staff bios are up on our website.

How to Dress and What to Bring to Row - New rower information. There are additional items when rowing at GL. Please look through your documents closely.

  • Please bring water and use plastic or sleeved water bottles to protect the rowing shells.

  • Bring a pair of socks that are easy on and off to wear while rowing.

  • A pair of water shoes for carrying and launching the boats at Solon Township Beach Park.  The road to the water is very rocky. There is no stopping for taking shoes off or on when getting in or out of the water.

  • Wear layers for changing weather

  • Wear athletic form fitting clothes. Loose clothing can get caught in the slides under the seat while rowing.

  • If you wear glasses, a Croakie-type strap is helpful because glasses don’t float.

  • The inside of the boat can get wet, so all devices should be put in waterproof bags.

Business Sponsorship

We have another new sponsor to mention! Thank you to Quick Storagelocated just off M22 on Maple City Rd for becoming our second business sponsor!

Bright Bridge Studios. A website Design and development company since 1999.

Complete Forms and Waivers on iCrew - Everyone, including Learn to Row participants, must complete the forms located in iCrew under Your Home in the Documents tab BEFORE volunteering (this includes rigging days) or rowing. Take a moment to do this now if you haven’t already. There are only 5 documents required and it takes about 15 minutes to read through everything and sign electronically. We will be checking all rower eligibility before allowing rowers to toggle into a row.

Forming an Organized Boat -

We will be allowing a limited number of team boat reservations to begin our season. We want to ensure we have available boats reserved for the more flexible open row option. But team boats are a great way to commit to rowing weekly. Do not stress if you aren’t on a team boat, that’s what the open rows are for. There will always be subbing opportunities as well. We anticipate only a handful of team boats will be organized.

Steps for getting your boat on the schedule:

  1. Get started on organizing a team by calling other members that you’d like to row with. Emails and cell phone numbers are located in the Club Roster.

  2. Contact Location Coordinator to get day and time availability (M-F AM/PM) Please know there will be coordination needed based on available coaching/coxing and number of sessions scheduled.

  3. Once a time has been coordinated and reserved. It is time to make sure there is one person designated as the captain. The captain is responsible for communicating with coach and Location Coordinator.

  4. Captain makes sure all required paperwork, membership fee, and team boat fee are completed and paid. Please give your boat name* to the Location Coordinator.

  5. Location coordinator will then put the boat on the calendar making it official.

* We are adding organized boat names this year. Get creative!
